The region’s multi-million-dollar rock lobster industry will have its annual catch cut for the first time since the quota system was introduced, following a downward spiral in catch rates and juvenile numbers.
Agriculture Minister Rory McEwen announced the 130 tonne cut for the new season which begins on October 1.
South East Professional Fishermen’s Association president Joel Redman said industry confidence remained high despite the cut.
“However, given the season we’ve just had, all of the fishers we met along the coast were happy to go with a more precautionary approach,” Mr Redman said.
Mr McEwen commended the industry for its responsible approach.
“The reduction to 1770 tonnes is voluntary because the management plan for the fishery did not formally require a cut under the current rules,” he said.
“In the current circumstances, the new quota can remain in place for two years consistent with the management plan.”
