An award-winning movie about the courageous children of Patongo, one of the refugee camps of northern Uganda, will be screened in Mount Gambier this weekend.
War Dance is about the victims of the murderous Lord’s Resistance Army and its 20-year war against the central government.
It follows the efforts of Patongo’s students as they pour their hearts into winning the national music competition.
Tragically, the country’s children have been the greatest victims in the conflict between rebels and government.
Many of them have been forced into the conflict by being stolen from their beds at night by the rebels to then become soldiers themselves.
Among the region’s 2m displaced survivors living in squalid conditions, the film tells the story of three of them.
Rose, a 13-year-old choir singer, Nancy, a 14-year-old dancer, and Dominic, a 14-year-old xylophone player have qualified to compete in the finals in the capital Kampala.
After a lifetime of trauma the children now have something to look forward to.
“War Dance” is being screened at Eastside Christian Centre this Saturday night to raise funds for refugees and street kids in Uganda.
A couple from Southern Uganda, Willy and Anne Tumwine, who house and educate a number of the children, will be in attendance on the night.
The screening starts at 7pm.
Entry is $10 per head ($5 for children) and supper will be provided afterwards.
