A youth has appeared in the Mount Gambier Youth Court sitting at Millicent facing two charges of unlawful sexual intercourse.

The 14 year old, who cannot be named, pleaded not guilty to the two offences which allegedly occurred on April 24 and 29 this year.

Defence counsel Boyd Groeneveld asked for the youth’s curfew bail conditions to be altered to allow him to stay out until 8pm as opposed to 7pm.

However Magistrate Bill Morris declined to alter the bail agreement, saying the defendant “should remain at home between 7pm in the evening and 6am in the morning”.

“He’ll be remanded to the 26th of August in Mount Gambier to appear before a Youth Court Judge in the District Court,” Magistrate Morris said.

I am very interested in knowing the outcome of this case and why was the youth not charged as an adult. there is a similar case in New York State that a 14-year old was charged as an adult for rape on an adult women and sentenced to 8 – 24 years.

Because we’re not America… And I’m interested in hearing the results of this case, too..

But given the standard nature of how these things are dealt with, there’ll surely be an uproar over the minimalist sentence..
