Division one men: Tigers 3 d Redbacks 1.

As one of the most eagerly anticipated grand finals for many years, the two old rivals Tigers and Redbacks squared off for the honous this year.

With Redbacks wining the first final against Tigers, Redbacks would have been quietly confident with a young up and coming side.

Tigers on the other hand has been the dominant side of the year with a lot of talent, experience and a point to prove, as the players have let themselves down in previous years.

The game started hard and fast as the capacity crowd anticipated.

Tigers attacked relentlessly for the opening goal with many close attempts highlighting the team’s desire.

Redbacks player Gary Langford pulled off many great saves and his side showed a lot with the experience of David Howell in control of their midfield attacks.

Youngsters Cameron White and Matt Broughton excelled with some nice link ups with Greg Andrae through halfback keeping Tigers defence honest.

Eventually Tigers got the breakthrough with a penalty corner converted by Mick Carne.

Redbacks stepped it up and were rewarded with a few of penalty corners and were unlucky not to convert on a few occasions.

It was Tigers though that got its second goal to give them a handy buffer going into the second half courtesy of Travis Doll, who finished off a great run by Darren Turner.

With both teams getting a rev up at halftime, they came out with the determination and pace only known to finals.

The first 15 minutes of the half saw both teams having their chances with both defences almost seeming impenetrable.

Tigers veteran defender Greg Cooper was outstanding at fullback, denying many opportunities with brilliant tackling.

Within the last seven minutes Redbacks broke through with a goal by Greg Andrea off a penalty corner and this gave a bit of hope for Redbacks, as the side only needed one successful strike to take the game into extra time.

The game intensified and both teams stepped up.

Even though it was late in the game both teams were fast and furious with Tigers pushing for the sealer with another goal minutes later from a defence splitting pass by Darren Turner, which found the stick of ever reliable Mick Carne who didn’t disappoint and finished with a strike to the bottom corner the to seal the game for Tigers.

This ended a dominant year for Tigers, as the club won four grand finals over the weekend.
