Grant High School’s values praised

The values of students and staff at Grant High School have been highly praised by representatives from the Department of Education and Children’s Services (DECS).
Malcolm McInerny and Mary Hudson visited the school last week to gain an insight into the school’s values-based approach to learning and how it makes a difference to the school.
After spending the day talking to randomly selected staff, students and parents, Mr McInerny and Ms Hudson said they found Grant High School to be very welcoming and a school that lives by its values of respect, trust and commitment.
“I was really impressed with the readiness of students staff and parents to articulate their school values and how they make an impact,” Ms Hudson said.
“Many people spoke of the positive relationships between students and teachers at Grant High School.”
In her preliminary findings, Ms Hudson commented that most students had no problem describing the school’s values and what they meant.
The audit also found that students had no trouble specifically naming teachers and fellow students who upheld the school’s values.
Principal Steven Phillips said he was thrilled with the results of the values audit because it confirmed the positive effect the values had on the school.
“Our values really underpin everything we do, defining our relationships and how we work together in a positive way,” Mr Phillips said.
“The general idea behind the audit was to use fresh eyes and see if the theory matches the practice.
“What this audit found was that they really are having a positive impact on the school, which is certainly heartening to know.”
Mr Phillips said while the audit had lots of positive things to say about the school values it also highlighted new directions for the future.
“We tend to immerse the students in our values or respect, trust and commitment, but in the future, there may be opportunities to teach them about values in general in specific subjects,” he said.
“Other than that, the audit has shown that we should keep doing what we’re doing because it’s obviously working.”

Values such as respect, trust and commitment are indeed worthy.
However, praising a school for simply doing its job is a sad indication of the public’s perceived opinion of our education system.
I hope that they are not teaching the students the tortured syntax and weasel words so abundant here.
A quick snippet:
“Our Teaching and Learning Principles are our agreed method for achieving our mission. These principles are as follows:”.….…..
(at the bottom of the list)
# Focus on Learning:
# We embrace, share and celebrate learning as a lifelong skill.
Heres the translation– we’re teachers, we teach.
Well thats refreshing to know.
Congratulations to the staff at Grant, for continuing to do what they are paid to do. Teaching can be a thankless job sometimes, admittedly, and they do an excellent job for most parts, but generally our salaries and wages are thanks enough.
