The Federal Workplace Ombudsman is targeting the hospitality industry to ensure workers are properly paid.
Hotels, restaurants, taverns and bars will be randomly audited nationwide as part of a three-month campaign.
The Workplace Ombudsman last week announced that 20 aged care workers in Mount Gambier and Millicent had been underpaid by more than $6000 after inspectors randomly audited various aged care facilities.
Workplace Ombudsman executive director Michael Campbell said the hospitality sector was earmarked for auditing following an analysis of complaints between March 2006 and October 2007.
Cafes and restaurants accounted for the most claims during that period, pubs, taverns and bars ranked fourth, accommodation houses ranked fifth and clubs ranked 10th.
Breaches of the Workplace Relations Act carry a maximum penalty of $33,000.
