Education Minister Jane Lomax-Smith has moved to ban corporal punishment in schools after it was discovered the practice had never been outlawed.

Although it ceased in public schools in 1991, corporal punishment has never been banned by law in South Australian schools.

The move to ban the practice is just one change to education laws scheduled for debate in State Parliament.

A 40-page discussion paper was introduced into parliament on Sunday covering areas of the 1972 Education Act and the 1985 Children’s Services Act.

Included in the discussion paper are the governance of public schools and early childhood development services, restructuring of public schools and early years services to prevent closure unless there is public support, materials and services charges, consultation and advice and responsibility for curriculum in government schools.

Dr Lomax-Smith has called for public comment on the discussion paper, which can attained online at www.edlawreform.sa.gov.au, or by calling 8226 3825.

All comments must be submitted by December 5.
