Australian qualifier Sally Peers has knocked second seed Sacha Jones out of the $25,000 City of Mount Gambier Blue Lake Women’s International Tennis Tournament at Olympic Park.

Peers defeated her New Zealand opponent in three sets yesterday, 3 – 6, 6 – 4, 6 – 2 and is now preparing to play American Robin Stephenson in the second round.

Peers told The Border Watch it was “a great feeling” to defeat Jones after working so hard to qualify.

“I played her in Rockhampton three weeks ago and lost 6 – 4 in the third, so it was great to reverse the result,” Peers said.

“I definitely think I played a lot better tennis here.

“I think in general I was a lot more solid. I made a lot more balls than last time.”

Peers struggled early in her match, but winning the final two sets proves she can match it with the best players at the tournament.

“I’ve come through qualifying, so I’ve played a lot of matches,” Peers said.

“I like playing here and feel comfortable on the courts.

“They’re not too fast and not too slow, so I like them and winning in three sets has given me some confidence.”

Tournament director Mark Handley said while the victory was great for the tournament, it is more exciting for Peers’ career.

“Sally has qualified for all the tournaments so far, so she’s had to do it the hard way,” Mr Handley said.

“While this means she’s playing a lot of tennis, the positive is that she is obviously seeing the ball well.
