Lightning planning to fire at Icehouse

It is now less than two weeks until the Adelaide Link Lightning return to Mount Gambier for its regular season Women’s National Basketball League match against Bendigo.

The Lightning (2−0) and Spirit (0−3) face off at the Icehouse on November 1.

Basketball Mount Gambier’s Beth Serle said the return of two WNBL teams was a major boost for the sport and could help the region become the Lightning’s second home.

“We got this game because of the way we supported the two games last season,” Serle said.

“We need that community support to continue if we want this to become an annual event.”

Last season the Lightning faced the Australian Institute of Sport and the Dandenong Rangers at the Icehouse during a season that saw the side charge through the minor round and then go on to win the 2008 premiership.

The Lightning is again considered one of the best sides in the competition and although the Spirit has struggled in its first three games, the side should have Kristi Harrower, one of the world’s best point guards, back in the line-up after her dispute with Russian club UMMC Ekaterinburg comes to an end.

On the Sunday following the game, the Lightning players and coaches are holding coaching clinics for juniors from noon to 2pm at the stadium.

“The players are an inspiration and show the kids how much passion they have for basketball,” Serle said.

“All the players will be there and the kids will learn new skills that they can take into the domestic competition.

“It will also show the kids that they can aspire to great heights and that they can make it through working hard and making the most of their natural talent.”

Bookings for the game can be made at the Lady Nelson Discovery Centre, the International Motel and at the Icehouse stadium.
