More than 40 people packed a meeting in Naracoorte on Sunday to protest against possible changes to the Pastoral Industry Award.

Australian Workers’ Union Mount Gambier branch organiser Terry Langham said people travelled from Penola, Millicent, Lucindale and the Naracoorte area to attend.

He said the consensus of the meeting was that a stand-alone award must be maintained to ensure conditions were kept for rural workers.

Mr Langham said some shearers also raised concerns about sub-standard accommodation being provided by farmers.

“Workers want their wages, conditions and security protected,” he said.

Mr Langham said the meeting’s sentiments would form part of submission to be lodged with the Industrial Relations Commission.

He said the farming lobbying was pushing for the modernisation of the Pastoral Award to make way for a generic award for all farm workers.
