Wine show judging about to begin

Almost 500 bottles will be uncorked tomorrow morning when two days of judging for the 2008 Limestone Coast Wine Show gets under way at Coonawarra Hall.

A total of 470 entries from 72 exhibitors representing wineries across the region will be judged by a panel that includes new chairman Huon Hooke and guest international judge Julia Harding MW.

“Judging is quite a fascinating process, and is actually a lot tougher than it sounds,” LCWS committee spokesperson Sarah Squire said.

“Wines are judged in ‘classes’ - defined by variety and vintage - and all judging is conducted ‘on the blind’ - judges are simply presented with a row of glasses to make their assessments, with exhibits scored using a points system.”

The Limestone Coast Wine Show is one of few regional shows in the nation to invite an international judge each year.

“We see it as a great opportunity to gain a comprehensive view of the Limestone Coast wine industry and the wines from our region,” Ms Squire said.

“For individual entrants, there is also the opportunity to have their product ranked alongside other labels within the region in terms of quality, offering an independent - rather than market - perspective.”

The results of this week’s judging will be revealed at a presentation dinner on Thursday night at Naracoorte Town Hall.

Results booklets will be available on Friday during a $15 per head public tasting session at Coonawarra Hall from 11.30am to 1.30pm.
