Mount Gambier is mourning the death of local trucking magnate and businessman Allan Scott AO, OAM.

Mr Scott, 85, died in the Mount Gambier Hospital today after a short illness. He died peacefully as members of his family took turns in an around-the-clock bedside vigil.

He is survived by his wife Grace, daughters, Robyn, Zena and Julie and son Ray.

Mr Scott had been in ill health for several months.

Tributes have begun to flow from political, business, sporting and community leaders.

A self-made multi-millionaire, Allan Scott came to Mount Gambier from Milang in 1952 with one truck and built an empire that now boasts the Scott Group of Companies which is the umbrella for many other businesses and a wide range of diverse interests.

These have included transport, fuel distribution and service stations, farming, media, property interests and development, horse racing and breeding, hotels, restaurants and retail department store Fidler and Webb.

He was a very giving man and his generosity in sponsorships to sporting clubs and donations to charities was said to have amounted to millions of dollars each year.

In recent years his $5m sponsorship helped saved the South Australian racing industry and the Morphettville racetrack was renamed Allan Scott Park.

In football he was a president, life member and active worker with the East Gambier Football Club.

At a national level he sponsored Port Power in the AFL.

My heart dropped this morning when I first heard the news, 10:00am this morning I was told that Mr Allan Scott had passed.

I never got to really have a conversation to Mr Scott but I can still remember back a few years ago when Allan Scott congratulated me and shook my hand for receiving the ‘Pride Of Workmanship Award’.

I was only one day late. I recently purchased Mr Scott’s biography as the first time I read the book I realised what a great and generous man he was. I had planned that I would take my book into Grace tomorrow to kindly ask if he could possibly sign the book for me but unfortunately I just missed out.

Allan Scott will always be missed and remembered for the great things he has done for many people and clubs.

‘Not Forgotten’ — Mount Gambier will always be with you.

I was nine years old and living in Milang, Christmas time, and my birthday was the day before Christmas.
An old Bedford truck pulled up out the front of our house with an old essex super six convertible with a dickey seat in the boot on the back.
Out jumped my uncle and said happy birthday Wol. This is yours.
We unloaded it, and he drove me around and said it was mine.
He changed my life and I will never forget him.
That was my Uncle Arch, that was the real Alan Scott.
    I will miss him.

    Loving Nephew — Wally
