Tributes continue to flow for Allan Scott

Tributes have continued to flow for Mount Gambier trucking magnate Allan Scott, who passed away on Tuesday morning.

Bob Hawke, former Prime Minister of Australia

I remember Allan Scott, not only as an extraordinarily successful businessman who did great credit to his district, the state and the nation, but also as a good friend.

I, and the University of South Australia, are particularly grateful for his considerable generosity in supporting the new Hawke Building within the university.

The Allan Scott Auditorium is a state-of-the-art facility and his endowment will continue to contribute to the benefit of student and public learning in the state for many years to come.

I extend my sincere condolences to his wife Grace and other family members.

Jeff Kennett, former Premier of Victoria

He was a feisty old bugger, but a wonderful character. He was clearly very successful, he understood in his own mind what he wanted to do with his life and what he wanted to build.

I related to him well, because he was such a big personality.

I enjoyed his company very much. He never wasted your time, there were never any unnecessary niceties, it was always about the issues which we were coming together for.

I saw him not that long ago during the football finals, where we had a great conversation, which will now hold greater meaning for me.

He was a doer, he was an achiever.

He set high standards, but he never set higher standards for anyone else than he set for himself.

Sir Eric Neal, former Governor of South Australia

How can one encapsulate in a few words the outstanding contribution to Australia, and to its people, made by one man during his working life?

Allan Scott gave so much to Australia in so many ways.

The creation of a diversified business empire provided jobs and investment opportunities for a great number of Australians.

He was truly a great entrepreneur and knew how to manage a business conglomerate, a rare skill these days.

But there was another side of Allan Scott, for while he made money, he dispersed large amounts to assist community causes.

His support of football and horse racing is well known, but not so well known has been his financial support for a wide range of community and sporting groups, particularly in the South East.

It is seldom that our community is blessed with the presence of a citizen like Allan. I am proud that he was my friend.

FUNERAL ON MONDAY

THE funeral for Allan Scott AO will be held at the Mount Gambier Presbyterian Church, Allyson Street, on Monday at 2pm.

In lieu of floral tributes, mourners are asked to make a donation to the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
