Cellist breaks with convention

Posted on November 5, 2008, 11:11am

The Riddoch Art Gallery will host “The Unconventional Cellist” on Thursday night as Kristin Rule performs with her semi-acoustic viola “Little Axe” and semi-acoustic cello “Pierre”.

Pursuing her desire to travel and share her music, Kristen brought a motorcycle and set off for a 23-week Australian tour on her Suzuki SV1000, using an RAP solar system to power her instruments.

Kristin graduated in 2000 with a Bachelor Degree in Composition from the Victorian College of the Arts after her final year of study was spent in Paris under the direction of Eugene Kurtz.

She later studied composition under the prominent Australian Composer Larry Sitsky before deciding to develop her improvisation and creative skills on the cello.

Kristen plays a five-string cello and four-string viola, synthesising string techniques with electronic effects and a looping pedal to create original compositions with stylistic diversity from Arabic and Indian to French, Chinese, Jazz and Classical.

Entry to tonight’s one-hour performance, which begins at 7pm, will be by gold coin donation.

Dang! As I sit and type, I am an hour and 20 late.
Wish I knew about this yesterday.
Good stuff, just sorry I missed it.

Pyrrho, the computer gremlins posted this article earlier than it was scheduled to appear. The concert is actually tonight (Thursday, November 6).
