Uncertain future for ABC centre

The future of Mount Gambier’s ABC Learning Centre remains under a cloud, following the Childcare Union yesterday calling on Federal and State Governments and company officials to clarify uncertainty surrounding the company.

As media reports speculate an administrator may be appointed to ABC Learning, union national secretary Louise Tarrant said the uncertainty for families and workers at ABC Learning Centres could not go on.

The Mount Gambier centre was only built in the last couple of years, reportedly at a cost of more than $600,000, has dozens of children enrolled at its facility on Queens Avenue.

“The time has come for governments to step in and for ABC Learning to urgently clarify its position,” Ms Tarrant said in a statement to The Border Watch yesterday.

“Families and workers need certainty. If administration does occur then it is imperative that the administrator and governments work together to ensure continuity of service for families and workers.”

Ms Tarrant said these centres provided an essential service for families.

“Childcare professionals working at ABC Learning are committed to providing quality childcare. However, they have financial responsibilities themselves,” Ms Tarrant said.

“The protracted and growing uncertainty about the company’s future has also been stressful for them.

“The first step in resolving the uncertainties about ABC childcare centres is for the company to issue a statement about its status.”

Staff at the Mount Gambier centre yesterday refused to comment on the issue or reveal how many children were enrolled at the facility.
