Eighteen-year-old former South Gambier cricketer Doug Newton has been named in the 14-man South Australian Redbacks under 19 side for the national carnival in Newcastle next month.
After taking 6 – 27 for University in the metro B grade competition on Saturday, Doug (pictured) backed up to take 3 – 30 in the U19 state trial on Sunday.
Doug made the national U17 squad in 2007 after an excellent performance in the national competition playing for the Redbacks U17 side.
Doug completed year 12 at St Peter’s College in Adelaide in 2007 and is now studying economics and finance at Adelaide University.
Today, Doug will be bowling to the Australian side in the cricket nets at the Adelaide Oval along with the other U19 Redbacks players.
This afternoon he will play in a 20/20 game for University in a First Grade game and next Sunday the U19 Redbacks will face off the state country side in a trial match.
While he has seen some success, Doug acknowledges that there is a long way to go to secure his place in the side and then to progress further.
