Victorian forest tracks to close

The Victorian Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) advises that it will be closing all firewood areas in state forests around Portland on Monday, July 7 to prevent damage to forest roads and tracks.

The winter closure is in place to reduce traffic through state forests during the wettest part of the year.

Senior forest management officer Justin Cook said that the light rain and drizzle experienced to date had already made forest tracks wet and slippery.

“With proper rain hopefully just around the corner it is time to introduce the annual winter firewood area closure in state forests,” he said.

Firewood collectors have one more weekend to collect their last loads of wood before the closure comes into effect.

Mr Cook reminded people that a permit is required before removing any firewood from a state forest.

“Regular patrols of the forest are conducted to detect people taking wood without a permit or during the closure period and penalties apply,” he said.

Firewood permits are available from the DSE offices in Portland and Heywood during normal office hours or at a number of firewood permit agencies.

The firewood areas will be re-opened on Monday, October 6.
