Safety upgrades have been demanded for the Dukes Highway after the fifth fatality on the highway in just four months.
The fifth fatality, which occurred on Friday, has prompted Member for Barker Patrick Secker and Coorong District Council Mayor Roger Strother to call for safety upgrades along the length of the road.
Mr Secker raised the issue in Federal Parliament, calling for the creation of a dual lane carriageway.
He said Dukes Highway was the busiest road in South Australia and the death rate was currently averaging more than one a month.
“The spate of recent fatalities has seen local media referring to it as the Black Ribbon of Death,” Mr Secker said.
Mr Secker said a dual carriageway was required due to increasing road use.
“What we need is reconstruction of the Dukes highway to a four-lane divided carriageway to complement Victoria’s plans to duplicate most of its Western Highway,” he said.
Coorong Mayor Roger Strother echoed the call.
He is seeking a meeting with Road Safety and Transport Ministers Carmel Zollo and Patrick Conlon to demand immediate action.
“The unnecessary loss of life on the Dukes Highway saddens me and I want to see a reduction in the carnage on this road,” he said.
