The Penola Pulp Mill developers could receive a boost as the forestry union steps up lobbying for a sustainable Commonwealth strategy for the timber industry.
Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union assistant state secretary Brad Coates of Mount Gambier said the union would work in the lead up to Christmas to convince politicians of the need for a government plan for facilitated growth, job security and improved value adding.
“We want this industry up off the mat in 2009 after losing mills in five states in the second half of 2008,” he said.
Mr Coates said South Australian communities had suffered as a result of the Dartmoor mill closure and the industry could benefit from a pulp mill in Penola.
“It is a good example of what could become possible if some planning was done to provide a sustainable road map for our industry and our region,” he said.
He said the union hoped Member for Mount Gambier Rory McEwen would support a joint approach to the Federal Government.
