UniSA has awarded one of five individual vice-chancellor’s awards for professional staff excellence to Mount Gambier campus manager Cathy Hughes.
Director of UniSA’s Centre for Regional Engagement (CRE), Professor Neil Otway said the award was testimony to Ms Hughes’ ongoing efforts and professionalism.
“I would like to publicly acknowledge Cathy’s significant contribution to the CRE over many years, and particularly recognise her unstinting efforts to make the Mount Gambier regional centre a successful arm of the institution,” he said.
This was the second such award that Ms Hughes has received — the first was in 2005.
“Cathy has been, and continues to be, a great ambassador for UniSA,” Prof Otway said.
“She can look back very proudly on the establishment of this operation, and know that she has left a legacy that will last for a long time to come.”
UniSA began its Mount Gambier operations in 2005 when 75 full-time and part-time students started studying on-campus in one of four degree programs.
Today there are more than 220 students studying one of six programs locally, with all of the first group of graduates in employment.
Ms Hughes said she felt honoured to be recognised for something she loves doing.
“I have always felt very honoured and proud to have been given the opportunity to front UniSA’s development in Mount Gambier, and while it was an enormous challenge initially, the past four years have gone so quickly because I really enjoy what I do and gain an immense amount of job satisfaction from helping people achieve their career and study aspirations,” she said.
“It really has been the perfect job for me, so winning this award makes the last four years even more special.”
Ms Hughes will take a year’s leave at the end of this year to pursue further studies at a masters degree level, and to write a book.
