With the weather finally warming up, residents across the South East are being reminded to remember that pets can suffer from the heat just as much as humans.
Clarke and Associates veterinarian Anna McBride said it was important to be sensible and make sure pets don’t get heat stress under the baking sun.
“People are less aware about heat stress in dogs than they are in kids, but it’s very similar,” Dr McBride said.
“You have to be careful because it can be fatal, although in most cases it’s very easy to manage.”
She said the best things to do for pets in hot weather was to provide lots of cool water and shade for them, not leave them in hot cars and keep exercise to a minimum.
“Leaving cool water around is great for pets on hot days and you can even put ice in their water throughout the day,” she said.
“And as long as there’s shade available, the pets will automatically find it.”
Those looking for a special treat for their pets can also make flavoured ice blocks to keep them cool and entertained, a trend which has become quite popular according to Dr McBride.
“All you need is to fill a tray with chicken or beef stock, sprinkle some dry food in and then freeze it,” she said.
“The bigger the block the longer the animal will be entertained and cool.”
Dr McBride also said it was vital to look out for signs of heat stress and call your local vet if concerned.
“Typical symptoms of heat stress include panting, weakness and collapsing, but these can usually be treated by running cool water in your pets mouth or lying them down on cool towels,” she said.
“Because it can be serious, it is important to bring your pet in if you’re worried.
“In any case, prevention is better than the cure so it’s best to think ahead and keep your pet as cool as possible in summer.”
