Call for road rule changes to be notified
Posted on January 29, 2009, 2:02pm
The State Opposition has called on the government to notify the community of road rule changes more effectively after claiming 99 changes were implemented this week.
Shadow Minister for Road Safety Stephen Wade said the notification of changes to road rules should be included with registration and licence renewal notices.
“The government needs to develop a strategy to ensure that drivers and cyclists are aware of changes to road rules. Road rules don’t improve safety; road users aware of them and abiding by them do,” he said.
The Opposition has called on the Government to work with the RAA to develop a strategy to communicate road rule changes.
“Road safety is a whole community issue. If road users aren’t kept in the loop then we can’t expect to see any benefit from road safety measures,” Mr Wade said.

Road rules should improve safety, not detract from it. The ridiculous rule where you are supposed to indicate when you are coming off a roundabout, even tho’ you are going straight ahead! — would have to be the most dangerous rule I know. The number of times I’ve seen drivers do this and I think they’re turning and they’re going straight ahead, you wouldn’t believe. If the roundabout wasn’t there, you’d be just going straight ahead. This rule needs to be removed immediately.
