Council warns dog owners

Dog owners have been warned they face $80 fines if their pets are not on a lead in public places.

Council has received a number of reports from people using the Crater Lakes area of dogs not being restrained by an appropriate lead, according to Cr Eugene Coscarelli.

“Reports have been received about unrestrained dogs intimidating walkers, one person has been knocked over by a free running dog and another has reported being bitten, so it is timely to remind residents that they must walk their dog on a lead unless in a designated off-leash area,” he said.

“The only public areas within the city boundary where people can exercise their dogs unrestrained, but still under effective voice command control, are Hastings Cunningham Reserve, Northumberland Avenue, Blue Lake Sports Park, Don McDonnell Reserve and Corriedale Park.

“It is an offence not to have your dog on a lead when using public spaces and the imposition of an $80 fine will certainly spoil the enjoyment of a walk, so council encourages all dog owners to be aware of the rules and not be caught out.”
