In October and November last year PIRSA conducted a statewide footrot survey to determine the prevalence of footrot in South Australia.

This survey was one of the recommendations of the 2005 Footrot Review. It had the support of the South Australian Sheep Advisory Group and was funded through the Sheep Industry Fund.

The survey targeted 80 sheep properties in areas with more than 400mm of rainfall per year.

Producer participation was very good and each property had up to three mobs of 100 sheep inspected.

Any sheep showing footrot type lesions were sampled and sent for laboratory analysis to determine infection.

Of the 80 properties surveyed, virulent footrot was found on five properties, resulting in an overall prevalence of 6.25pc.

Four of these properties were in the South East.
