Prolific money earner Bad Billy won his sixth country cup with an all-the-way win in Saturday’s $13,050 Edenhope Cup over 1850 metres.
“We will keep him on the country cups trail and pick his races carefully because I don’t think he’s as good as he was,” winning trainer Darryl Dodson of Telopea Downs said after the race.
“The Penola Cup on Easter Sunday is definitely one race I have in mind,” Dodson added.
On a track suited to leaders, punters took advantage of that fact and backed Bad Billy into favourite ($6-$4) for Saturday’s feature race.
Mount Gambier jockey Kane Post did his bit by racing Bad Billy to perfection in front, and the 9yo gelding never looked like being run down and repeated his 2007 Edenhope Cup victory.
For the runner-up the well beaten De Thong, it was his third second in the past two months while Fraaclase battled on well for the minor placing.
Emerging apprentice Nathan Rose took riding honours on the seven race card with a winning double.
South East trained gallopers won three of the last four events, all specked at good odds.
