Discuss the weather

What do you think of the cold wet weather we’re having this week? A reader sent this letter to the editor:

I am so over the cold, wind and rain (okay, I am having a whinge). Many people would agree our weather is currently soul destroying.

Keeping up with an endlessly drippy nose, toughing out painful chilblains and getting everything else to work in winter is serious business.

Its “freeze your balls off style” relentlessly disintegrates any plans for trying to find anything fun about the day, and so we cancel exciting plans to live life on the edge.

The next cheery positive person to state the glaringly obvious … it is so good for the farmers … will get a big bang from my brolly because I am just not strong enough right now.

I, as many members of my family and friends, agree, isn’t it wonderful to see a return to a typical Mount Gambier winter.

As a resident for nearly all of my 29 years, I would have to say that it is a sad thing to see no water lying around in the swamps and water ways of years past.

Some people, who live by the convenience of popping down to the supermarket, look past the fact, that without rain and winter, Australia would cease to exist as we know it. It’s a simple equation really, no water equals no farming, no farming equals no food for anyone ( at an affordable price at least).

My Uncle recently returned from a holiday to Mildura and he was moved to comment that he didn’t know how farmers were exisiting up there, because there was nothing to feed the animals with, or enough water to grow anything. With the recent statements of the dire state of the Murray-Darling Basin and also the Murray River and Coorong we should start to get worried about where the rest of the state will be taking it’s water from next.

The South East is the wettest part of the driest state, on the driest continent on earth. We really should count our blessings rather than be upset that we might have to “wipe our nose”, maybe some people need to engage in a visit to the doctor every now and again.

Perhaps with all the rain that is “disintegrating plans for fun”, people should be planning to put a rainwater tank on to collect water for summer, when all the “heatwaves” cause us to complain about the tiny water restrictions that we face. I recently bought a 1000 litre rain water tank. Saturday the 5th I installed it onto a roof catchment of less than 35 square metres and from 6:00pm Sunday the 5th until 2:30pm Monday the 7th it was already full and overflowing. Thats more than 1000 litres in less than 21 hours!!

If some people don’t appreciate how lucky we are here in Mount Gambier and surrounds maybe they should move to Queensland, where surely they would be warmer year round.

I love the rain. I dont think we’ve had nearly enough yet.
    Plus…
It’s so much easier to rug up in Winter than it is to cool down in Summer.
