Making most of water discussion

Posted on April 24, 2009, 9:09am

Neal Dalgliesh of the CSIRO will be at the Frances Hotel on Wednesday, April 29, from 2pm to 7pm to discuss how to make the most of the water in soil.

Mr Dalgiesh has researched cropping and soil management nationally and internationally for over 25 years and has specific expertise in plant available water and soil health.

Topics to be discussed will include moisture availability, how much water crops will use in a season, tillage systems and their affect on soil moisture storage and rainfall infiltration, how soils can be managed to increase water holding and efficiency and management of cropping in wet and dry years.

Using soil water information in the “APSIM model” to improve decisions on crop choice and fertiliser applications will also be discussed.

The techniques discussed will help farmers make the decision on whether top-dressing of nitrogen will make a profit, or whether they are better to hold off and spend the money elsewhere.

Entry costs $10 to assist with catering for afternoon tea and participants are invited to join the organisers for dinner at their own cost.
