A Grant district councillor has described the State Government’s move to establish another community-based committee at Mount Gambier Hospital as “staggering”.

Cr Alan Hill — a former member of the now defunct Mount Gambier Hospital Board — told this week’s council meeting he was confused to the reasons why there needed to be two committees at the public health facility.

He said it appeared the Health Advisory Committee would continue to represent the community and advocate for future health needs, while the new body would be involved in the management framework of the facility.

It is understood the body will be called the Mount Gambier Consumer Advisory Committee.

Nominations are being sought for 10 community members for the new body.

“I just find this amazing … either committee will have no power,” Cr Hill said.

Cr Hill said he just wanted to alert people to the confusion over the new structure.

Cr Malcolm Porter echoed similar sentiments.

He raised concerns over whether all the work and history which had been accumulated over the past 12 months would be discarded to make way for this new body.

“It appears to me that they will start putting that information aside and will start gathering information again,” Cr Porter said.

He claimed the decisions could become out of date because the new body would have to start gathering information again.
