A car crashed into the Carlin and Gazzard showroom.

A man in his late 70s was trapped in his vehicle for more than half an hour this morning after it ploughed into a Carlin and Gazzard car showroom window.

The Mount Gambier man was driving on Commercial Street East when it’s believed he pressed the accelerator instead of braking as he approached the Anthony Street intersection.

On-duty police officer Constable Alia Lyons said the man panicked and swerved, and clipped the back of a Toyota Hilux which skidded across the intersection.

According to Const Lyons, the first driver lost control of his Toyota Kluger and it slammed into a showroom window facing Abthony Street.

She said enquiries into the matter would continue.

SA Ambulance Service, MFS and SES crews had to remove doors and various parts of the car’s interior to reach the man, who sustained head injuries and lacerations to his face and limbs.

Limestone Coast Patient Services manager, Andrew Thomas said due to the extent of his injuries, the extrication process had been extensive to prevent causing further harm.

The man was treated and stabilised at the scene and then conveyed to the Mount Gambier Hospital.

There were also several unsecured tools in the boot of the car, including a screwdriver that lodged, knife-like, in the back seat.

Mr Thomas said this highlighted the impact unrestrained items could have, even in a low speed accident.

“They can become missiles which have the potential to cause lots of harm,” he said.

The Kluger was deemed a write-off and was towed from the scene.

The vehicle narrowly missed crashing into a $300,000 Mercedes Benz in the showroom, while a display Honda was scratched.
