The South Australian road toll has risen to 61 following the death of an elderly Mount Gambier man at the Royal Adelaide Hospital on Wednesday.

The man, aged 78, was airlifted to Adelaide with head and chest injuries after his Toyota Kluger smashed into the Carlin and Gazzard car showroom window on May 6.

His car had collided with another vehicle at the Commercial Street East and Anthony Street intersection, then spun off and ploughed into the showroom.

He was trapped in the vehicle for more than an hour while emergency services personnel removed windows and doors to free him from the wreckage.

He was flown to Adelaide after Mount Gambier Hospital staff established the extent of his internal injuries.

The state’s road fatalities are now almost double the 36 recorded this time last year.
