Information night on outback travel

Posted on June 4, 2009, 12:12pm

Campers, hikers, fishermen and 4WD enthusiasts will benefit from an information night for outback travellers this weekend.

The SES South East Operations Unit and the South East Radio Group have combined to present the night, aiming to make people more aware of safety and the necessary precautions they should take before embarking on an adventure.

The information evening will be held on Saturday at the new Emergency Service Facility on Jubilee Highway East alongside Forestry SA from 6pm to 10pm.

The program will include sessions on the VKS-737 radio network, HF-Tel and the Australian National 4WD Network, UHF CB radios and available types and the use of correct channels when home or away.

Questions on the use of HF radio versus satellite phones and samples of GPS and information on their uses, types and costs will also be available.

Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBS) will be explained and how these may be used and tracked, also mapping software for use with laptops and GPS units.

Radio group member Charles Prime said the outback was somewhere visitors could not afford to take chances.

“Not only do you need to know your vehicle and its capabilities, but because you may have family on board their safety isn’t something you gamble with,” he said.

“You need to know where you are and how to get help if you need it.”

More information on the session is available from Mr Prime on 0417 798 725 or SES member Wayne Kilpatrick on 0407 718 908.

There is a $10 entry fee which includes tea and biscuits. With numbers limited to 50, tickets must be pre-purchased.
