Mount Gambier doctors say they are facing unprecedented demand for appointments as uncertainty continues regarding swine flu in the city.
While the State Government refuses to confirm or deny whether cases have been reported in Mount Gambier, many people with respiratory complaints have been seeking medical advice.
Hawkins Medical Clinic has urged employers to let staff take short-term sick leave for up to a week without the need for a medical certificate.
“Most people with cold and flu symptoms can look after themselves at home with fluids and paracetamol,” the clinic said in a statement.
“We would like to keep doctor’s appointments for those people at high risk — with breathing difficulties, high fever and those who are frail because of age or pre-existing illness.
“Please note also that it is not possible for patients advised to be quarantined by health authorities (for example as contacts of patients with H1N1 or swine flu) to shorten this period by attending the clinic.”
