Blue Lake Gymnastic Club members have been successful at the Victorian Gymnastics Championships held in Melbourne recently.

Matthew Jennings 16, competed at Level 7 Open and had to undergo two trials before being eligible for finals.

During these competitions Matthew placed second and fifth overall and as a result has been selected in the Victorian Level 7 Open team to compete at the National Championships being held in Brisbane early next month.

Callum Unger (14) and Sean Crawford (14) both competed in Level 5 Open and underwent one trial prior to the finals.

The boys competed once in the all round competition with Jennings finishing eighth, Unger, seventh and Crawford, 10th.

The top six competitors from each apparatus then competed again in the apparatus finals.
Jennings qualified for vault and high bar and was reserve for rings, Unger competed on floor, high bar and pommell and was reserve for rings and bars while Crawford qualified for floor.

In the finals, Unger was successful in gaining third place on floor.

The competition was held at the State Hockey and Netball Centre in Melbourne with competitors from Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand.

The boys train at the BLGC for approximately four hours per week and competed against club and State High Performance Centre gymnasts who train up to 30 hours per week.

The selection of Jennings for the Victorian state team is a result of his dedication and commitment to training.

It has been many years since a country gymnast has been selected for the Victorian team as selection is highly competitive.

He is the only gymnast at this level in the western region of Victoria and works hard to maintain the high level of skills and the standard required for state selection.
