Boandik Lodge aged care facility and Dycer Constructions have signed contracts for a $3 million upgrade of the original section of the Kessal Wing Nursing Home on Lake Terrace East.
Boandik Lodge board chair Eric Roughana and Dycer Constructions proprietor Chris Dycer on Tuesday signed the contracts for the upgrade, which will provide 18 bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms to residents.
The upgrade will also include an activity room, a bathroom with spa bath, north-facing lounge and dining areas with easily accessible outdoor living areas, courtyards and staff facilities.
Construction had started before the signing of the contracts on June 1 and is expected to be completed next year.
Boandik Lodge manager Gillian McGinty said the upgrade of the building, which was built in 1970, had become necessary to provide contemporary accommodation.
“There will be extensive renovation to the existing building including extensions on the northern and southern sides, roof and ceiling replacement, walls removed, corridors widened and addition of outdoor areas,” Ms McGinty said.
While the upgrade will be partly funded with an $800,000 zero interest Federal Government loan, the rest of the funds comes from Boandik Lodge reserves.
Ms McGinty said although building within an existing building was a challenge, Dycer Constructions was an obvious choice to do the development.
“Dycer Constructions are aware of the specific requirements for aged care buildings and are committed to providing a quality outcome,” she said.
“We are pleased that our long relationship with Dycer Constructions will be continued for this development.”
