Five Western Border players and a similar number from the Mid South East have made the final cut for the Murray South East team to tackle this weekend’s South Australian Country Football Championships in Port Pirie.
The 26 player squad was finalised by coach Peter Collins and fellow selectors after a training session at Keith on Sunday.
The Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara league provides the most with 10 players, while the River Murray league will have six representatives, including the captain, James Pedler from the Mypolonga club.
Millicent playing coach Steve Duldig and Penola powerhouse Adam Merrett have been named as joint vice-captains for the two-day carnival, which will include six regional country football leagues split into two groups.
Each team will play two qualifying games on Saturday with final positional playoffs scheduled for Sunday.
The Murray South East region has never won the carnival, which dates back to 1994, but did finish a credible third last year.
Collins and his match committee have put the initial 55 player squad through three training sessions before whittling it down to the 26 players who will now carry the hopes of the region with them.
Other Western Border players joining Duldig in the team include his Millicent teammate Cameron Haggett, North utility Anthony Kilsby, South Gambier forward Joe Noonan and hard working East Gambier midfielder Dylan Dempsey.
From the Mid South East, Dylan Gamble (Mount Burr), Dylan Coxon (Robe), Kongorong teammates Brad Cordy and Tyson Ploenges along with — arguably — the competition’s best player, Brian Casey, will all have the chance to struf their stuff at the country carnival.
