Social solution for older singles

Mount Gambier woman Jeni Jackson struck a nerve with other singles in the South East last week when she tackled the dilemma of the older single .

Since then, the 46-year old who has been single for three years, has received a string of emails and “snail mail” letters and she quickly learned she was not alone.

“I’m comforted to find that I am not the only person in their 40s struggling with the single life,” one of the letters read.

“It is very difficult to know what to do. Of course, the club and pub scene is vile and loathsome, and certainly not designed to appeal to people who prefer conversation to doof-induced deafness.”

“You certainly hit the nail on the head,” another letter read.

“It is very difficult to get out and meet other single people in Mount Gambier … as most of my friends are either married or already have a partner

“I know what you are facing as I am someone who has never been into nightclubs or hotels and have never been interested in online dating or even joining a dating service, and because of this I am the only single girl in my group of friends,” was the response from another reader.

But Ms Jackson wanted more than empathy; she wanted singles to stand together and take action.

“Has anyone got any suggestions?” Ms Jackson asked in her letter.

“Maybe getting a night organised called “over 40 and getting on with it.”

Then the suggestions came in: from book clubs, to social groups and eventually Ms Jackson saw light.

“It seems there are already various social groups for people over 40 running in the South East, but they don’t always meet everyone’s needs or they only make friends within their groups,” she told The Border Watch.

“I want all single individuals and social groups for singles over 40 from the South East and over the Victorian border to come together for a weekend we will call ‘Over 40, single and loving life’.

“Maybe each can wear a sticker with their name and tick boxes showing their interests or hobbies so that it’s easy to get a conversation going with someone else.”
