Health centre funding plea rejected

Posted on July 8, 2009, 12:12pm

Grant District Council’s attempt to gain Federal Government funding for an extension and upgrade of the Port MacDonnell community health and medical centre has been rejected.

Council applied for funding under the first round of the National Rural and Remote Health Infrastructure Program, an initiative of the Federal Government.

The government has advised council that a further funding round will be made available later this year.

Improving medical facilities and services has been an ongoing goal of council.

The failure of the Rudd Labor Government to fund this project is disappointing.
The biennial Australia’s Health report notes that those living outside major cities have less access to health care, longer patient transport times and higher health risks in employment and daily life.

It is therefore critical that projects which suuport health services in rural Australia, be funded and supported.

The facility would have improved access to health services by rural South Australians by providing sustainable and primary medial and health infrastructure to meet the demands of the rural district of Port MacDonnell.

Importantly, the upgrade of the Centre would have addressed the problem of increasingly noticeable disparities in health outcomes, with rural and regional Australians generally doing less well than those in the cities.

    Shame Mr Rudd, shame.

    Hey Patrick,

Kevin 07 doesn’t have to tolerate the impoverished conditions in health care in rural South Australia, because he has never had to experience doing it tough in the bush.

Does Kevin 07 really care about the high suicide numbers, people dying from horrific injuries, heart attacks.…all preventable, because of a lack of critical services?
