South East residents of Aboriginal descent this week had the chance to learn how to research their family history on the State Records database.
State Records Aboriginal Access Team senior officer Andrew Wilson travelled to Mount Gambier, Kingston, Millicent and Naracoorte for one-on-one sessions with residents to show them how to benefit from a database of 122,000 names and corresponding information.
“The database is helpful for people from the stolen generation and others who have been removed from their families and to those who want to identify records relating to themselves and their immediate family,” Mr Wilson said.
Although the family history outreach event was part of national NAIDOC Week, Mr Wilson said the Aboriginal database had been in use for the past 10 years and could be accessed on an ongoing basis.
“Those who attended the sessions left with computer print-outs of their family and we hope they will spread the word about the database so that we will see a ripple effect after our visit,” he said.
