First whales observed at Beachport

Posted on July 14, 2009, 10:10am

The annual whale-watching season began at Beachport last week with numerous sightings.

At least one whale was seen near the town’s famous jetty for an hour on Monday.

In the afternoon, a pod of four was seen off the “Salmon Hole”. They were believed to be two mothers with their calves.

Beachport was the site of a whaling station in the 1830s.

Sightings from the local shore are occasionally made between May and September and are reported to the Beachport Visitor Information Centre.

When this occurs, a sign is placed in the centre’s window and the media are alerted.

Some blue whales have been seen further out to sea in the Southern Ocean off Beachport.
