Support for separated parents

Separated parents in the Penola district will have the opportunity to meet with Child Support Agency (CSA) staff in the town on Tuesday, July 22.

CSA’s South Australian manager Brenton Halliday said separated parenting was a common experience for many Australian families.

“The CSA has nearly 530 separated parents registered in the Penola area,” he said.

“In areas where there is no CSA office, these private appointments give parents the opportunity to discuss any issues or concerns about child support face to face with a CSA customer service officer.”

Mr Halliday said the impact of separation could be overwhelming, and parents had many concerns as everyone in the family adjusted changes in circumstances.

However, he said with goodwill and cooperation from both parents, many families managed the challenges well.

“It’s important for parents to get access to the support services they need and understand all their options when it comes to child support,” Mr Halliday said.

“There will be free CSA information booklets available about all aspects of separated parenting, including maintaining a relationship with kids from a distance and tips and hints for people who are re-partnering.”

Parents will also be able to find out about major changes to the Child Support Scheme, which came into effect on July 1.

Details about the new scheme are available on the CSA web-site at www.csa.gov.au/schemereforms.

For more information on the personal appointment sessions to be held from 9am until 4pm at the council building in Arthur Street on July 22, or to make an appointment, parents should call the Mount Gambier Regional Service Centre on 8726 0978.
