West netballers achieve milestones

Three of West Gambier’s most decorated netballers recently chalked up a collective milestone of 750 games.
Melissa Ryan (300), Karen Mitchell (250) and Stacey Fox (200) celebrated their personal tally of milestone matches on the same day, making it a memorable occasion for the trio.
Ryan and Fox are both members of West’s A grade team, which is knocking on the door of the top five in the Western Border Netball Association’s top five with two rounds to play before the finals series begins.
West are currently just 0.78pc behind the fifth placed Portland, but play reigning premiers Hamilton tomorrow before a final round away game against bottom side Casterton.
Mitchell plays in the Roos’ B grade team, which has lost just one game this season and is sitting proudly on top of the ladder.
Ryan started her career with West in 1991 and was a regular representative in WBNA combined teams between 1993 – 2001.
A part of the 1993 and 1999 West Gambier premiership teams, Ryan has also won two club best and fairests and for five years straight — 1998 – 2002 — was named in the WBNA Team-of-the-Year.
She has also coached West’s A grade side and in 1998 was a member of the South Australian team that took part in the Open Fiji Invitational tournament.
Currently co-coach of West’s A grade team, Ryan is also the first player to reach 300 senior games in the history of the WBNA.
Fellow A grade, Stacey Fox also boasts a proud record at West.
Best and fairest awards have come at regular intervals, 2000 (Under 13), 2001 (Under 13), 2002 (Under 15), 2003 (Under 15) and 2004 (Under 17).
At association level she also won the WBNA best and fairests in 2002-03.
Fox has represented the South East region in South Australian Country Championships on more than one occasion and in 2003 was named in the top 10 players of the carnival.
