Council wants to lock in prison rates

Grant District Council will explore whether the local government body can start billing the Mount Gambier Prison for rates.

This follows the State Government proposing a new 80-bed, two-storey medium-security facility and a separate 36-bed low security facility.

Even without the prison extension, the existing rates payable would be around $43,000.

Council will seek legal advice on the matter.
