Residents of Aramanta Drive in Mount Gambier were shaken when an allegedly drunk driver ploughed his vehicle into the side of a house late on Thursday night.
Police were called to the scene about 11.45pm, where they found a car had left the road out of control and run over several retaining walls before being wedged against the house.
It also smashed into a power box, resulting in damaged fuses and exposed wires.
A crane was needed to remove the damaged vehicle.
The driver, a 28-year-old Mount Gambier man, was located shortly after police arrived. He has been charged with aggravated driving without due care and drink driving after he recorded an alleged reading of .175.
Police operations manager Sergeant Andy Stott said the man had been lucky to escape without injury, possibly as a result of being slowed by the retaining walls before impact.
“If this had not occurred it could also have been significantly worse for the occupants of the house,” Sgt Stott said.
“We do not believe this was the result of hoon driving.”
The driver will face the Mount Gambier Magistrates Court at a later date.

“we do not believe this was the result of hoon driving” living pretty close to the scene the car could be heard for 10 mins previous to this driving in a manner I would call “Hoon Driving” the other thing that would point to “hoon driving” would be the fresh marks around the area. Im no detective though!
Yes Clint, but try getting the cops to do anything about hoon driving. Living on a street that borders a school, a house a few doors down from ours constantly has people driving in a reckless manner. And reports have been made a number of times, but nothing’s happened.
Couldn’t believe it today when i read that the police didn’t believe the driver wasn’t a hoon driver. You could hear him for 10 minutes before the crash — sounded like he was on Crouch street North, Wireless Road etc. Very very noisy. Didn’t the police do a door knock in the area. I’m quite a long way away but i could certainly hear him. Heard the sqeal of tyres and the thud of the crash. Then dead silence.
Why would the police state it was not hoon driving? Perhaps it’s because his car was not drivable, so they don’t want to impound a damaged car that requires them to deal with something too hard?
