Former State Liberal Party leader Dale Baker has retained his position as chairman of the South East’s peak regional development organisation.

Mr Baker’s appointment was announced in a joint statement by the Commonwealth and South Australian governments, along with the SA Local Government Association, revealing the board of Regional Development Australia (RDA).

The new organisation replaces the State Government’s Limestone Coast Regional Development Board (LCRDB) and the Federal Government’s area consultative committee.

Mr Baker was formerly chairman of the LCRDB.

The other board members are Mark Braes (deputy chair), Evan Flint, Rob Foggo, Sally Klose, Gwenda Lawlor, Moira Neagle, Steve Perryman, Ruth Schubert, Glen Schultz, Abi Spehr and Richard Vickery.

Federal parliamentary secretary for regional development, Maxine McKew, congratulated the appointees.

“RDA boards will be a local voice for communities across South Australia,” Ms McKew said.

“For the first time, local leaders will give formal input to all governments in South Australia on the issues that matter to their region.”

State Regional Development Minister Paul Caica said the quality and diversity of the board augured well for the renewal of South Australia’s regions.

“The new RDA boards are made up of local people with the leadership and commitment to work with government to develop their communities,” he said.

“We have the people in place who can deliver on the goals we have set them in working with all levels of government on the best way to build jobs and investment in their communities.”

The announcement says the RDA will:

  • Provide input to governments on local regional issues;
  • Provide information to regional communities on government initiatives;
  • Deliver government programs and services;
  • Help coordinate regional planning and regional development initiatives.
