Cowan scholarship increased

A scholarship for one student studying at UniSA’s Mount Gambier campus will double next year.

Cowan Regional Grants, awarded to students at Whyalla and Mount Gambier, will increase from $2000 to $4000.

The grants help students beginning full-time study at the campuses with associated costs, including materials or course fees and living and travel expenses.

Cowan Trust chairman Bob Cowan said the trustees were pleased to be able to provide an increased grant, despite the challenging financial environment.

He said the primary aim of the scholarship was to encourage more regional students to recognise the value of tertiary study.

“Given that the South East has a particularly low rate of participation in tertiary education, we aim to provide assistance to regional students who want to study in Adelaide,” Mr Cowan said.

“But we also recognise that the regional campuses of universities offer an opportunity for students to study locally.”

He said UniSA was focused on increasing the participation rate of people from regional and lower socio-economic areas, where 25pc of its domestic students were drawn from.

The Cowan Trust also provides scholarships for a 10-day voyage on STS Young Endeavour to social work students from all UniSA campuses and hopes to attract applications for the scheme from the South East.

A recent board meeting of the trust allocated $162,000 for grants and scholarships in 2010 to be awarded through universities and colleges, as detailed on www.cowangrant.org.
