Students excel at being active

Students from five schools in the South East have kicked, jumped and run their way to an award in the 2009 Premier’s Be Active challenge.

Glenburnie, Mount Burr, Nangwarry and Rendelsham Primary Schools and Gordon Education Centre were listed among 50 high-achieving schools in the state to each receive $1000 to buy sports equipment.

The Be Active challenge recognises students from Reception to Year 9 who can stay active for at least 60 minutes a day, five days a week for at least four weeks.

The initiative is backed with a junk food ban in school canteens, physical activity programs in schools, sports facilities grants and initiatives to encourage healthy living.

Education Minister Jane Lomax-Smith said good habits learned early in life gave young people the best chance of leading healthy and active lifestyles into adolescence and adulthood.

“Being active can help to reduce the chances of South Australians suffering from cardiovascular disease, type two diabetes and some forms of cancer,” she said.

Participation in the Be Active program has grown from 7450 in 2007 to nearly 28,000 this year.
