Being called ugly may put a dent in the confidence of many bar attendants, but for seven in the South East it’s a title they aspire towards.
The Leukaemia Foundation’s 2009 UGLY (Understanding, Generous, Likeable You) Bartender of the Year aims to raise $90,000.
Mount Gambier currently has four entrants: Cheryl Grass (Flanagan’s Irish Pub), Darrell Porter (Mount Gambier Hotel), Vicky Dunn (Park Hotel) and Shannon Hazelwood (Jens Hotel), while Millicent, Penola, Naracoorte and Beachport are represented by Gabrielle Sare (Grand Hotel), Tim Sutcliffe (Prince of Wales Hotel), Max Lock (Naracoorte Hotel) and Leanne Sutherland (Beachport Hotel).
Ms Sare is currently sitting ninth overall in fundraising across the state, with all seven South East bartenders competing against 79 others to win a share in several prizes.
Flangan’s Irish Pub barmaid Cheryl Grass signed up for UGLY after losing a family member to cancer six weeks ago.
An auction will be held tonight at Flanagan’s from 7.30 to raise funds. It will feature two caps signed by the late Peter Brock, followed by live entertainment from Nick Charles.
