Grant Council seeks prison payment

Grant District Council will seek an ex gratia payment from Correctional Services following plans for a significant expansion of Mount Gambier Prison.

Legal advice sought by council revealed the local government body could not recover more than $43,000 in rates each year under legislation.

Council investigated whether they could bill the prison annual rates following a new 80-bed two storey medium security facility being proposed for the site.

The prison is operated by a private company.

Chief executive Russell Peate said the “significant” expansion would have an affect on the community and an ex gratia payment should be explored.

He said this money could be used for community projects in the district.
