RSPCA seizes 200 sheep from Keith property

The RSPCA seized more than 200 sheep on Wednesday from a property at Keith in the largest seizure of its kind in South Australia’s history.

The sheep, many suffering from flystrike and a variety of other health issues, have not been shorn in months and their wool is extremely overgrown, according to an RSPCA spokesperson.

In a substantial operation that started in the early hours on Wednesday and continued well into the night, a team of RSPCA inspectors identified animals that were at risk and/or experiencing suffering.

“Sheep that are fit to travel will be transported to the society’s Lonsdale Shelter where they’ll be cared for until a more permanent solution is found,” the spokesperson said.

“Recent legislative changes will enable the RSPCA to seek a legal authority to sell the sheep prior to the resolution of any legal proceedings. Nevertheless, it is likely that the sheep will remain in RSPCA care for some weeks.”
