The managers of Robe’s Lakeside Manor YHA Backpackers visited Adelaide for the 2009 South Australian Tourism Awards on Saturday night with hopes of being named the state’s best backpacker accommodation for the third year in a row.
By the end of the night they had scored the hat-trick and been inducted into the prestigious South Australian Tourism Hall of Fame in front of 600 industry representatives in the gala dinner at the Adelaide Convention Centre.
Managers Scott Gavan and Debbie Gray, along with Melbourne-based owner Oscar Rosero, attended the black tie event and were thrilled the facility’s uniqueness was recognised.
“The house is nearly 130 years old and it doesn’t matter what age group comes in, they are always in awe of the building and can’t believe it is a backpackers,” Ms Gray said.
“A lot say we need to take the ‘s’ out of the name and call it a hotel.”
The couple, who formerly worked in the Adelaide and Adelaide Hills food industry relocated to Robe a year ago to operate the premises.
Other South East successes at the awards ceremony included Cape Jaffa Wines, which took out a silver medal for the tourism wineries, distilleries and boutique breweries category after receiving bronze last year and recently taking home the sustainability award at the 2009 SA Great Limestone Coast regional awards.
Must @ Coonawarra was presented bronze for deluxe accommodation after winning the category in 2007.

the more success in awards for the Limestone Coast is a positive step. Eventually the State Government will have to accept that the region is a jewel in the crown and give the region the acknowlegement it deserves and possible future funding across the board. The Limestone Coast has shown that you do not need a mining venture to be successsful
